Jennifer Smith is an award-winning reporter who covers legal affairs for The Wall Street Journal. She previously wrote about the environment and politics for Newsday, a daily newspaper on Long Island that has won 19 Pulitzer Prizes.

Smith anchored Newsday's coverage of Hurricane Irene, blogged about climate change research from a remote field station on Alaska's North Slope and chronicled New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's rise to power. She flew into the eye of Hurricane Earl with a weather reconnaissance team and reported from flood-devastated New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.  Smith writes about conservation, pollution and suburban growing pains on 21st-century Long Island--among them, the challenges of handling sewage, trash and drinking water for the region's nearly 3 million people.

She also covered breaking news, such as the Medford pharmacy shootings that left four people dead, and wrote features on topics as varied as the
Apollo moon landing and the lasting repercussions of the murders that gave rise to the Amityville Horror phenomenon. Smith covered former governor Eliot Spitzer's political downfall, wrote about Pope Benedict XVI's visit to New York City and reported on the 2005 transit workers strike. She writes a column on Long Island environmental issues.

Smith's work has won prizes from the New York State Associated Press Association, the New York Newspaper Publishers Association, the Press Club of Long Island and the Society of Silurians. She has taught at the
CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
